GREEN FLASH
Have you seen it?

Watching a Hawaiian sunset. What a soothing way to bid farewell to the days end. How spectacular the array of colors are as the sun passes through the atmosphere. Under the right conditions, just as that giant burning sphere sinks out of sight, this unusual phenomenon takes place. The GREEN FLASH.

Don’t blink, you’ll miss it! It is very rare and in an instant it is over. Why, you ask. What causes it?

As the sun shines down on us, here one earth, streams of light contain all the colors of the rainbow. The earth’s atmosphere causes this light to scatter. Have you ever seen a prism shoot beams of rainbows as light passes through it? It’s basically the same effect.

Just as the last tip of the sun sets below the horizon, these streams of light split into something similar to a rainbow. Blue light is at the top and red at the bottom, with green as the other primary color. When the red light dips beyond the horizon and the blue light is being fanned across the atmosphere, now is our brief chance to view the rare GREEN FLASH.

After an evening surf session, just the other night, the conditions were idea for this phenomenon to happen. The beach was lined with tourist and locals alike, equip with cameras and tropical drinks. Hawaiian music filled the air. At that instant it happened. We all experienced it! All in unison everyone cheered and applauded. For some, it was a once in a life time show.
